| Physicians & Prescribers The purpose of this page is to provide information and links for all clinicians and specialties, but I especially want to welcome primary care providers. Psychiatry (and psychiatrists, for that matter), can seem very nebulous, frustrating, and difficult to pin down. While the science of psychiatry is not as well defined as in some other specialties, it is not voodoo medicine. Most physical illnesses have psycho-somatic components and/or psychiatric complications. Patients with psychiatric illnesses, as a whole, have more physical illness and more primary care visits than the general population. People with serious and persistent mental illness die, on the average, 13 years earlier than people without these illnesses, indicating the population is not as physically healthy. Primary care providers prescribe the vast majority of antidepressants dispensed in the United States and they are typically the initiators of psychiatric treatments. Yet the communication between psychiatrists and primary care providers leaves a lot to be desired. This section of The Practical Psychiatrist is an attempt to address, if only in a small way, this lack of communication. I have designed the content of this section with the primary care provider in mind. I hope it will provide useful information that you can find easily. If you have any suggestions about improving the content of this page or about making it more user friendly, please email me at comments@psystone.com. On this page are links to basic information about psychiatry, comprehensive psychiatric information sites, medical reference sites, support and advocacy organizations, professional organizations, national volunteer organizations, information/technical support websites, and many other categories. There are Links are being added daily, so check back often. If you can't find what you are looking for, email links@psystone.com.
