Welcome to The Practical Psychiatrist!

The Practical Psychiatrist is a website created for the purpose of
providing information about a wide variety of mental health topics to
consumers (patients), their family members, professionals,
    physicians, and the general public.

Despite the fact that mental illness affects, either directly or indirectly, the vast majority of people
in our country, it is still a topic about which many people know very little. Often, the only
understanding  a person might have of mental illness is based on what they see on television or at
    the movies.

The stigma and fear associated with mental illness has a profoundly negative and sometimes fatal
effect on those who suffer with these illnesses. Individuals are reluctant to seek help for problems
because they don't want to be labeled as "crazy". People are ashamed of their illness because
rather than receiving help, they have been told that they are weak or lazy or stupid or weird.
Some folks hold on to the belief that mental illness is caused by demons or evil spirits. Family
members are often at a loss about how to get help for their loved one and many struggle with
their own mis-perceptions and biases regarding mental illness.

The thing is, mental illness is just like any other illness. It has a biologic basis just like diabetes or
high blood pressure. Mental illness can be treated. People with mental illness, even serious, long
term mental illness can get better. Living with mental illness is not a hopeless state of affairs.
There is hope! People with mental illness can and do recover. As a psychiatrist, I see people
everyday who have experienced severe mental illness and who are now living happy and
    productive lives.

Take a little time to educate yourself about mental health and mental illness. This website is
designed to provide information about these topics to anyone who is seeking it.  Whether you are
    a consumer, a family member, a teacher, a journalist, a lawyer, a mental health professional, or a
physician, you should be able to find what you are looking for. Start with the category on the
toolbar with which you best identify, but don't limit yourself to that category. If you browse
around the other pages, you will likely find a lot of useful information.

If you don't find the information you are looking for, or if you have general questions about
psychiatry, please email me at askthedoc@psystone.com and I will do my best to help you find
    answers.
